Staying and Creating in Izumo, Concluding Dedication of Artworks (Worship of Life, Worship of the Earth, Worship of Water) at the Dedication Festival

[土と人 / 土地と人 / 人と人が結ばれる喜び]
Soil and human / Land and dwellers / The joy of uniting person and person
土を拝み、土に祈る。生と死をそばに置く。そして今ここを、慈しむ。
生命を循環させてくれる土。その土に着く人。
現代とこれからの、土地と人の関係性を見つめる。
Bowing to the land, praying to the soil.
Placing life and death close at hand.
And cherishing this moment here and now.
The soil that enables the circulation of life.
The individuals who touch that soil.
Examining the relationship between modern times and the future, between the land and its people.
5月から約３ヶ月に及ぶ滞在制作と奉納祭が、全国のサポーター様、地元島根の皆様のおかげで無事に終えることができましたことをご報告いたします。
I would like to report that the three-month staying and creating in Izumo, concluding dedication of artworks that started in May was able to be completed successfully thanks to supporters from all over the country and everyone in Shimane who was involved.
出雲大社 奉納 「命の礼拝」
出雲大社での奉納祭は、前々日と記録的豪雨と災害が続き、お祭りの開催が心配される中でしたが、当日は一転、お天気に恵まれ、晴れ間の中で無事に奉納祭を迎えることが叶いました。
多くの方々にご参列いただきましたことを心より感謝申し上げます。
The previous two days of record-breaking rainfall and disasters had us worried about holding the festival at Izumo-taisha Shrine, but the weather turned around on the day of the festival and we were able to hold the dedication festival safely in the clear skies.
I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the many people who attended the festival.
北島國造館 奉納 「水の礼拝」
万九千神社 奉納 「大地の礼拝」
「自分の身体は、島根県の土、日本の土で細胞が構成されているんだな。」地元を離れて芸術の元を辿ったときに気がついたことでした。
そして、それは一人、一人、誰の中にも同じように「その人にとっての土地と土が存在する」ということがわかりました。
“I guess my body is made up of cells from the soil of Shimane Prefecture, of Japan.” This is what I realized when I left my hometown and traced the source of my art.
And I found that it is the same in each and everyone of us, “the land and soil exist for that person”.
人と大地は大きな結びで繋がっている。
目には見えないけれど、この世界のバランスをとっている何か美しい存在がいる。
幼少期の頃、森の中で寝ていたときに知れたのは表土と自分には境目なんか無くて、「いつか土に還っていく」その確かさが自分にとっての本当の世界でした。
今回の滞在では自身が「土地の恵である“土”そのもの」にフォーカスすることによって、それを表現し伝えることができるかもしれないという可能性を試みたものでした。
People and the earth are connected by a great knot.
Although we cannot see it with our eyes, there is something beautiful that keeps the balance in this world.
When I was a child, sleeping in the forest, I knew that there was no boundary between the topsoil and myself, and the certainty that “one day I will return to the soil” was the true world for me.
This project was an attempt to explore the possibility of expressing and communicating this by focusing on the “soil itself,” which is the blessing of the land.
出雲滞在中は、神道の世界を身近で学び、制作や現地の子どもたちとのWS活動、関わる方々を通じて「土地と人々を結ぶとは一体何だろう？」と模索、実験を繰り返す日々でした。
思い返すと、今までの制作活動で、一番苦しい期間だったと思います。
During my stay in Izumo, I learned about the world of Shinto closely, and through my creations, workshop activities with local children, and the people involved, I spent my days exploring and experimenting with the question, “What does it mean to connect the land and dwellers?’’
Looking back, I think it was the most difficult period of my art production career so far.
そして、それは「命（いのち）を礼拝する」ことから始まる。
ということに気がつく旅となりました。
And that begins with “worshiping life.”
It was a journey that made me realize this.
まず、「自分の命を礼拝する」こと、そこから縁があり結ばれていった「土地の方々の命を礼拝する」こと、そして、その方々が住まう「大地の命を礼拝」する。ということでした。
だからこそ、土地の人々にとって信仰の対象である出雲大社や神社に奉納するということは、重要な意味を持つことになると再確認することができました。
First, “worship your own life”, then “worship the lives of the people in the land”, with whom we have ties and connections, and then “worship the life of the land where these people live”. That’s what it means.
For this reason, I was able to reaffirm the importance of dedicating to Izumo Taisha and other shrines, which are objects of faith for the local people.
自分を尊ぶことは、頭で分かっていてもなかなか難しいことだと実感しています。
でも、全てはそこから始まり、それが「命の礼拝」という作品のタイトルに繋がっていきます。
そして、水玉によって生まれた円の一つ一つは、今回の活動で関わってくださった方々の命、土地に住まう方々の命を表現しています。
I realize that respecting yourself is quite difficult even if you know it intellectually.
But everything starts from there, which leads to the title of the work, “Worship of Life”.’ Each circle created by the polka dots represents the lives of the people involved in this activity and the lives of the people living in the area.
これが正解という形であったのかは今もわかりません。しかし、滞在を経て、最初の作品として奉納させていただけたことは自身の芸術活動の軸において非常に重要な意味を持ったと感じています。
I still don’t know if this was the correct answer. However, I feel that being able to dedicate this work as my first work after my stay there had a very important meaning in the axis of my artistic activities.
[ 作品について ]
・出雲や地元の土地で採取した、砂鉄の黒を闇として捉え、稲佐の浜の砂を素としてとらえて、
水を落とした衝撃波に、闇から円が生まれて光になりました。
稲佐の浜は、神様をお迎えする浜の砂として、そこから出雲大社へ向かう信仰の光の始まり。
闇から生まれた、水玉の円は命の衝撃波だったのだと気づきました。
そして、この闇は今まで表現できていなかった自分の闇そのものであると、制作後に気づきます。
[About the work]
・I took the black iron sand collected from Izumo and local lands as darkness, and the sand from Inasa beach as the raw material, and the shock wave of falling water created a circle from the darkness and became light.
Inasa Beach is the sand of the beach that welcomes the gods, and is the beginning of the light of faith heading towards Izumo Taisha Shrine.
I realized that the polka dot circles that were born from the darkness were the shock waves of life.
After completing the work, I realized that this darkness was my own darkness, which I had not been able to express until now.
このとこに気づけたのは、出雲大社の千家権宮司さまと参拝を通じてご一緒させていただく中でお話されていた会話がヒントとなりました。
「生命も何もかも、全ては闇から生まれる、だからカオスは必要なんです。」という言葉でした。
「その人がその人であること。素のままで美しく尊いことである」ということを教えていただきました。
それは、神道のベースとなる「一人一人が大地の宝であり、一人一人神様である」という思想そのものと感じました。
What made me realize this was a conversation I had with the Senke chief priest of Izumo Taisha Shrine while we often went on walks together while visiting the shrine.
His words were, ”Everything, including life, is born from darkness, which is why chaos is necessary”.
“To be who you are. It is beautiful and precious just as it is”.
I felt that this was the very idea that is the basis of Shinto: “Each person is a treasure of the earth, and each person is a god”.
[ 現地の子どもたちと土を結ぶ ]
[ Connecting local children to the soil ]
出雲の斐川町へ訪れた際、地元の万九千神社の錦田宮司様から「出雲」という言葉の由来の一つを伺う機会がありました。
雲は、無限に湧き上がるエネルギーの象徴、そして様々な形を変えて天と地を結び、循環する永遠性の象徴でもあるとおっしゃり、それは正に「無限の可能性を秘めている子どもたち」そのものであると感じました。
そのお話から発展し、出雲の土地に住まう子どもたちと共に、わたし自身が今回の滞在制作で使わせていただく、土地の土や砂を使って作品を作るWSを地元の方々の協力の元、開催させていただきました。
当初予定していた人数を超えての開催となり、参加してくれた子どもたちと川や海で砂や土を採取し、和紙に漉き込んで作る作品作りは、想像以上に楽しんでいただけました。
When I visited Hikawa-cho in Izumo, I had the opportunity to ask the chief priest Nishikida of the local Mankusen Shrine about one of the origins of the word “Izumo.”
He said that clouds are a symbol of energy that rises up infinitely, and also a symbol of eternity that changes its various forms to connect and circulate between heaven and earth, which I felt was truly “children with unlimited potential.
This story led me to hold a workshop with the cooperation of local people to create artworks with children living in Izumo, using local soil and sand, which I myself will use for my project.
The number of participants exceeded our original plan, and we were able to enjoy more than we had imagined by collecting sand and soil from the river and the sea with the children and making works of art by making them into Japanese paper.

作品は、出雲大社前の「神門通り」の各店舗に飾られ、神社の夏祭りで展示された後、それぞれの子たちの手元へと渡りました。
The works were displayed in stores along Shinmon Street in front of Izumo-taisha Shrine, displayed at the shrine’s summer festival, and then passed to the hands of the respective children.
[ 活動の収穫、今度の活動について ]
・今回の活動は、作品のテーマを現地での滞在の中で作り上げていくところからスタートし、自分自身が土地や土にフォーカスすることによって、滞在制作や活動を通じ、人々の信仰と芸術の関係性、永続性を再確認した旅となりました。
・宗教(信仰)と芸術は元々一つであったことや、出雲大社や神社に作品が残り続けるという何百年先の作品作りについて想いを馳せる活動のスタートとなり、今後の表現や活動において、自分の中に確かな軸を見つけることができました。
・この度の出雲で出会った方々を通じて、「土地と人々を結ぶ」活動は来年以降も継続的に続けていくことが出来ることとなりました。
[ Harvest of activities, upcoming activities ]
・The theme of this activity started with the development of the work during my stay in the area, and by focusing on the land and soil myself, I was able to reconfirm the relationship and permanence between people’s faith and art through this project.
・This is the start of an activity that reminds me that religion (faith) and art were originally one, and that artworks will continue to remain in Izumo Taisha and shrines hundreds of years in the future. I was able to find a solid axis within.
・Through the people I met this time in Izumo, I have decided that I will be able to continue my activities of “connecting the land and dwellers” in the coming year and beyond.
滞在制作場所
この度の活動ができたのは、全国のサポーター様の皆様、お手伝いくださったたくさんの地元の皆様のおかげです。また、大切なことをいつも思い出させてくれ、信頼してくれている人のおかげです。
そして、島根県、出雲を守る神様に言い表せないほど沢山のご縁とギフトをいただいたと感じております。
This activity was made possible thanks to all our supporters from all over the country and the many local people who helped out. I am also grateful to the people who always remind me of what is important and who believe in me.
And I feel that we have received many unspeakable connections and gifts from the God who protects Shimane Prefecture and Izumo.
これからも関わってくださった方々の想いを繋ぎ、結び、形にしていきたいと思います。
そして、この出雲をスタートとして、これからも一つ一つ進めて参ります。
皆様一人一人の命の結びがたくさんのご縁を繋ぎ、彩り溢れた日々となりますことを、心よりお祈り申し上げます。
