I – Wave moment Ⅰ

This work emerged from a larger art project developed in the Seto Inland Sea region of Japan.

The surface was created using handmade washi paper incorporating sand collected from Innoshima Island and iron powder from a local shipyard. Guided by the movement of water, the composition was formed through gestures that flow across the surface like waves.

As the embedded iron gradually oxidizes, new colors continue to emerge over time. This ongoing transformation reflects both the changing nature of the sea and the passage of time itself.

The work was inspired by my experience of Innoshima, where the sea has long connected islands, sustained livelihoods, and shaped local culture. For generations, it has been both a source of life and an object of awe.

During my stay, Japan had just entered the rainy season. I remember working while listening to rain falling like a waterfall—a quiet and deeply peaceful experience.

Through this work, I hope to create a space where viewers can surrender to the rhythms of nature and drift inward, guided by the subtle fluctuations of the sea.
